For people who came in through Honolulu, the index gives the following information:
- Last Name, First Name, Middle Name
- Series (the basis on which this person entered the country, for instance, "Case
files of non-immigrants admitted as students teachers and ministers")
- Case File Number
Keep in mind that for Honolulu records, it may be difficult to be certain that you
have the correct individual in your search results. A search on WONG Shee, for example,
may turn up 12 individuals, with no other information as to when they arrived, when
they were born, or where they were from. All you will know is that there are 12
case files for people named WONG Shee and perhaps, from the Series number, the basis
on which they entered.
The index to case files for San Francisco arrivals is richer in detail, making it
easier to find the person you are looking for. There are, for example, listings
for over twenty people named WONG Sing, but it is easier to identify which WONG
Sing you are looking for because the index might tell you when each arrived, what
ship they came on, and how old they were at arrival.
You can search on any of the following: last name, first name, case file number,
place of birth, and ship. The results for each person will include:
- Last Name, First Name, Middle Name
- Case ID, Case Number, Box Number, Series, A-File Number
- Ship, Port, Date of Arrival, Destination
- Age of Arrival, Date of Birth, House Number, Street
- City of Birth, State of Birth, Country of Birth
- Other First, Last, and Middle Names
- Court Record/Remarks
