Early Arrivals Record Search (E.A.R.S.)

About This Site

This site is a cooperative endeavor between the Institute of Business and Economic Research, the Berkeley Population Center  and the Haas School of Business (all at the University of California, Berkeley) and the National Archives and Records Administration. Many dedicated NARA volunteers and students contributed countless hours to compiling the databases available for searching on this site. If you are interested in volunteering for this project, please contact the archives at 650-238-3501.

The data were supplied by Daniel Nealand and William Greene, National Archives and Records Administration, Pacific Region in San Bruno, California. Lisa Martin developed the database; web programming and site design were done by Jacob Howard Neal Fujioka. All are from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Patt Bagdon at IBER designed the web page banner.

The project organizer is Bob Barde, Deputy Director of the Institute of Business and Economic Research, University of California, Berkeley. His article, "Detention at Angel Island: First Empirical Evidence," is available at http://staff.haas.berkeley.edu/barde/_public/immigration/SSH%20article%20as%20published.pdf. Questions about this web site can be directed to Mr. Barde at barde@haas.berkeley.edu. Questions about access to individual case files should be directed to NARA: (650) 876-9009; e-mail to sanbruno.archives@nara.gov.
